Coach Eric Ward

After playing basketball for 4 years at Payson High School, Coach Ward continued to foster his love of basketball through coaching. Since 1991, he has coached both boy's and girl's basketball teams at various levels, including high school, junior high school, YMCA, and youth levels. Coach Ward emphasizes a team-first environment while teaching the fundamentals and concepts of basketball.Coach Ward started with the AZ Mustangs coaching staff in 2012.

Coach Brady Rath

Coach Rath is currently attending Grand Canyon University and is the assistant coach for the freshmen basketball team at Sunrise Mountain HS. He graduated from SMHS in 2014 and was point guard for the varsity basketball team. Coach Rath is great with kids and will help our players learn what it takes to be a successful high school student athlete as well as help develop our point guards and improve our team's ball handling.Coach Rath started with the AZ Mustangs coaching staff in 2014.

Jeff Butchin - Business Manager
Jeff Butchin helps our players and parents with any “off the court” questions they may have. Jeff communicates about practice times, game times, collection of fees, and any general communications for all teams. Please consider Jeff as the first point of contact should you have any questions. If he is unable to answer your question, he will find the answer for you or put you in contact with someone that can.

Coach Gary Rath- Founder and Director

Coach Rath started the AZ Mustangs Club in 2010. He is currently the Sunrise Mountain High School  boys head varsity coach. Coach Rath was  the assistant coach for the SMHS varsity boys basketball team from 2009-2015. Prior to joining the boys basketball team, he was the girls varsity head basketball coach at SMHS since the school opened in 1998. Under his direction the girls team won 3 regional championships, advanced to 2 final fours, and won 195 games in 11 years of varsity competition. As one of the premiere coaches in the area, Coach Rath has been asked to coach the state All Star Team and was voted regional Coach of the Year 3 times. Coach Rath was also awarded the City of Peoria Youth Coach of the Year for 2008/09.

Coach Charles Wilson

Coach Wilson has been coaching youth basketball since 2008. He has been head coach and assistant coach for several youth leagues in Pennsylvania before moving to AZ in 2011. Prior to coaching he played high school basketball - 1 year junior varsity and 3 years varsity - winning 2 Pennsylvania state championships and 3 Philadelphia city championships. Coach Wilson started with the AZ Mustangs in 2015.

Coach David Scott

Coach Scott has been coaching youth sports since 1988. He played high school basketball for nationally ranked Chester High School in Pennsylvania, one of the most feared schools in the state.

His first coaching job came during the summer of 1988 when he was only 18 years old. He loves to develop kids and build the physical and mental toughness it takes to succeed on and off the court. Coach Scott is a graduate of Indiana University of PA with a degree in business administration. While attending college, he won 2 intramural league championships.​ Coach Scott joined the AZ Mustangs coaching staff in 2014.

Coach AJ Demaree

Coach Demaree has been coaching youth basketball since 2002. He coached with the City of Peoria for 8 years and was named Coach of the Year in 2011. He started coaching Jr. High School basketball in 1998 coaching at Oakwood Elementary for 4 years, where took his teams to victory at 2 district championships, and currently coaches at Coyote Hills Elementary. Coach Demaree started with the AZ Mustangs in 2015.

Coach Michael Puente

Coach Michael Puente has been coaching youth sports since 2005 at various levels for basketball, football, and volleyball. He was awarded the Basketball Coach of the Year award for City of Peoria in 2012. Coach Puente believes in fundamentals, hard work, and discipline when it comes to his coaching style. Coach Puente believes in having a servant heart and always remains grounded in his faith, family, and love for sports.
